{"id":4677,"date":"2023-03-06T16:18:35","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T16:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/erafoen.org\/?p=4093"},"modified":"2023-03-06T16:18:35","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T16:18:35","slug":"era-at-gaia-nigeria-plastic-policy-processes-review-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/erafoen.org\/?p=4677","title":{"rendered":"ERA at GAIA Nigeria Plastic Policy Processes Review Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From February 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0through the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a02023, Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria represented by Melody Itiswell at The GAIA Nigeria Workshop with the theme:\u00a0<strong><em>CSOs Engagement with National and<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0International Plastic Policy Processes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The well-attended workshop had\u00a0about 12 Member groups from across Nigeria, GAIA Africa representatives from Ghana, Media Houses, and some virtual participants.<br \/>\nWe had an intense conversation\u00a0with some government institutions and private bodies such as the Lagos State\u00a0Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA,\u00a0Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Lagos State Recyclers\u00a0Association, and Lagos State Waste Pickers Association.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In an intervention made by Melody during the workshop, she lamented the bad state of the\u00a0<\/strong>government-managed dumpsites located in different areas of the states in Nigeria, which is an eyesore and a major source of pollution. Their impact range from bad smell\/odours, surface &amp; groundwater contamination, the release of greenhouse gases, hazards caused by burning the refuse, loss of vegetation, Soil contamination, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She went further to say that there&#8217;s an urgent need\u00a0for the rehabilitation and or closure of these waste dump sites while advocating for the creation of\u00a0<strong>\u201cResources Sites\u201d<\/strong>. Resource sites would see the repurposing of what we may have termed waste because such materials or products we have deemed no longer useful or are unable to meet their intended. These resources\/materials\/products can be used in remanufacturing the same product or other useful products, like converting organic waste into compost products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melody advocated the government should give more attention to waste management, there setting good examples for the public to follow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end\u00a0of the event, a communique was made that demanded the government to place a ban on\u00a0single-use plastics, encourage the Zero Waste initiative, create room for public participation at all levels of policy development and implementation, ensure the proper integration of waste pickers into the waste management chain, strengthen wider dissemination of information to the public, and to say No to any\u00a0incineration plant because aside being a false solution the\u00a0cost of building one plant is enough to deal with waste from its\u00a0source.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also embarked on a field visit to LASEPA where we made a\u00a0presentation of the Zero Waste Guideline booklets and encouraged them\u00a0to extend their efforts (the good practice of a ban on single-use plastics and nylon within their\u00a0office environment, the Trash to Cash initiative, and the mini effluent treatment plant) to other Government institutions and the state\u00a0at large.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From February 13th\u00a0through the 16th\u00a02023, Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria represented by Melody Itiswell at The GAIA Nigeria Workshop with the theme:\u00a0CSOs Engagement with National and\u00a0International Plastic Policy Processes.
