In the face of increasing climate issues in the world today, the Zero Waste Practice is the solution to the excess production of waste and its disposal.
This was made known during a sensitization meeting by Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) and Zero Waste Ambassadors (ZEWA) to the Environmental Health Officers of Ikpoba-Oka Local Government Area of Edo State.
Speaking to the Health Officers at the meeting, ERA/FoEN Project Officer, Waste Management, Melody Enyinnaya stated that poor waste management is one of the key human factors contributing to climate change and that observing the #ZEROWASTE practice of zero/minimal waste generation and or recycling could reduce floodings and other environmental hazards caused by it. According to her, the Environmental Health Officers are a bridge between the local government policymakers and the people, hence this meeting with them is aimed at taking and implementing the learned zero waste actions and policies at the local government level and then to all corners of the state.
The Zero Waste concept is a circle of waste management that puts every waste product back into use, it can save the environment from the effects of excess waste and could be of economic value to the society says the Edo State Coordinator of ZEWA, Kelly Eyonse. He called on the Environmental Health Officers at the Ikpoba-Oka Local Government Area to promote the idea of zero waste in their offices, homes, and during their sensitization programs around the state.
The team from ERA/FoEN and ZeWa presented our Zero Waste Guidelines to the Principal Environmental Health Officer of the LGA, Mrs. Blessing Uwadia who represented the Head of Environmental Health Officers of Ikpoba-Oka LGA, Mrs. Caroline Owegie, she thanked the team for the insight on the zero waste management policy. She solicited partnerships and collaboration between Recycling Centers, the people, and the Environmental Health Officers of the LGA.
